Decide the bankroll first
A bankroll is money you have set aside for betting and can afford to lose entirely without it affecting your rent, your family or your peace of mind. It is not your salary, and it is not money you expect back.
Write the number down before you place a bet. Everything else is a percentage of it.
Flat staking
The simplest approach that works: stake the same amount on every bet, usually 1% to 3% of your bankroll. With a ₦100,000 bankroll that is ₦1,000 to ₦3,000 a bet.
Flat staking means a losing run shrinks your stake naturally, because you recalculate the percentage as the bankroll falls. It also means no single bet can do serious damage. Our track record is measured this way — one unit per pick — because it is the only honest way to compare results over time.
Why chasing fails
After three losses at ₦2,000, doubling to ₦4,000 to "get it back" feels logical. But the new bet has the same chance it always had; all that changed is the damage it does when it loses. Four losses in a row is completely normal even at a 60% strike rate — it happens roughly once every forty bets.
The maths of doubling is brutal and quick: four doublings from ₦2,000 reaches ₦32,000, and a bankroll that could absorb ten flat bets is gone in five.
A realistic expectation
Even a genuinely good bettor wins something like 55% of even-money bets. That is a small edge that only shows up over hundreds of bets, and it is invisible over ten. Anyone promising more than that — "sure odds", "fixed matches", "100% guaranteed" — is selling something, and what they are selling is not information.
If betting stops being entertainment, or you find yourself staking money you need, stop and speak to someone. Every licensed bookmaker offers deposit limits and self-exclusion, and using them is a sign of judgement, not weakness.
Common questions
How much should I stake as a beginner?
One per cent of a bankroll you can afford to lose, on every bet, without exception. Adjust only after a few hundred bets, not after a good weekend.
Should I stake more on higher-confidence bets?
Some experienced bettors do, scaling by edge rather than by feeling. Until you have a measured record showing your confidence is well calibrated, flat staking is safer and easier to learn from.
