Why comparing odds matters more than picking winners

Most bettors spend their energy deciding what to back and almost none deciding where to place it. The second decision is easier, entirely within your control, and worth more than people believe.

The gap is real and it is large

Bookmakers price independently, so on any given match you will routinely see 1.85 at one and 2.00 at another for exactly the same selection. That is an 8% difference in what you get paid for making exactly the same decision.

Our odds pages show the best available price for every match, and every prediction names the bookmaker offering it.

What it costs over a season

Suppose you place 200 bets in a year at ₦2,000 each — ₦400,000 staked. If you consistently take a price 5% worse than the best available, you give away roughly ₦20,000 in winnings you were entitled to, without making a single extra bad decision.

Put differently: a bettor who breaks even at the best prices loses money at average prices. The margin between winning and losing is usually smaller than the gap between bookmakers.

The margin you cannot see

Every bookmaker builds a profit margin into its prices. Convert all three 1X2 prices into percentages and add them up — the amount above 100% is the margin. A sharp bookmaker might take 3%, a generous-looking one 8%, and the difference is invisible unless you do the arithmetic.

This is why we strip the margin out before publishing any probability. See how we check those numbers against what actually happened.

What to do about it

Hold accounts with three or four bookmakers rather than one. Check the best price before every bet, not after. And be suspicious of one bookmaker being far more generous than the rest on a single selection — that is usually a sign they know something, not that they are being kind.

Common questions

Is it legal to hold several betting accounts?

Yes. Using more than one licensed bookmaker is normal practice and is how anyone serious about prices operates.

Do you get paid when I click through to a bookmaker?

Some links may earn a commission. It never affects which price we show as the best one, because the best price is calculated automatically from the data.
